What is biogenic CO2?

Biogenic CO2 is carbon dioxide from sustainable biomass, i.e. from sources that meet the strict criteria set out in the European REDII and REDIII directives. These criteria include a ban on the use of raw materials on the Annex IX exclusion list, the obligation not to contribute to deforestation, not to come from protected areas, and to come from countries that are signatories to the Paris Agreement. From 2041, e-fuels (synthetic fuels) must be produced from biogenic CO2, in accordance with the European Union’s REDIII Directive.

Why choose biogenic CO2?

Biogenic CO2 refers to carbon emitted or stored in the atmosphere from biological or organic sources. This carbon is considered “neutral” in terms of emissions, as it comes from a short cycle in which carbon is absorbed by plants and then released during the combustion or degradation of organic matter.
Sources of biogenic CO2 include :

Organic raw materials

Plants, trees and other forms of biomass.

Organic waste

Agricultural, food and forestry residues

Fermentation

Microbial processes generating CO2.

Biomass combustion

Wood waste, plant residues, sewage sludge.

Today, the main source of biogenic CO2 is the recovery of CO2 captured during biogas purification.
